QLav Portable BidetAside from regular dry toilet paper, there are three or four alternative methods currently available for personal cleanliness and hygiene. This page will take you through these methods to give you an idea of what is out there and how it relates and compares to the QLav as a hygiene solution for such problems as vaginal odor relief, pruritis (severe itching), hemorrhoid care and feminine hygiene for those travelling.
Regular Dry Toilet PaperThe most common method for general toilet, dry toilet paper is composed of thin fibers which are actually cells from the pine tree. Many have experienced the discomfort of wiping with dry toilet paper, especially when experiencing diarrhea or afflicted with chronic anal/rectal disorders. Even remaining fecal matter or paper fibers can be a source of further irritation. Some try wetting toilet paper to ease the chafing that it causes, but this method doesn't work very well and can be very messy. Mechanical Toilet SeatsThese are electrically controlled devices that turn your toilet into a sort of high-tech bidet. Basically it is a sophisticated water delivery system. This is a great luxury if you want to afford the purchase and installation, which can cost up to $1,000.00. The user controls the unit from a console on the side. Some models have a blow dryer. The drawbacks are that it is not portable and it is an electromechanical device, subject to breakdown and costly repairs. The QLav offers a superior level of control with versatility and convenience.
Traditional BidetThese have been available for centuries. While popular in some European countries, the general American public has given a thumbs down to this type of fixture. The traditional bidet is awkward to use for simple daily toilet hygiene. One must have a reason to use it instead of a shower. It is definitely awkward for a person wearing clothing to utilize without splashing water all over themselves. Bidets are quaint and European, definitely an alternative to a shower, but are impractical for quick cleansing after using the toilet. Battery-Operated BidetFairly new on the market, this small portable device holds a small amount of water and is essentially a battery-operated pump that jets water onto the private area. They cost around $90.00, and (as with all electromechanical devices that are battery-operated) are subject to battery consumption, decreased performance as batteries wear out, and product wear and tear which eventually leads to breakdown. Nozzle/Hose AttachmentsThere are several nozzle/hose attachment systems that you can install on your toilet water line that will deliver water via a nozzle to the rear of the toilet. These have to be operated manually by turning on a valve. They usually run about $100.00, require installation and are limited to cold water only. Also, having the nozzle fixed at the rear of the toilet bowl means that it is vulnerable to contamination.
